Meet Our Founder

Jen Hu
Founder & Creative Philosopher, Lunara

I grew up in a family where healing was not a separate activity – it was woven into the rhythm of daily life. My grandparents practiced traditional Chinese medicine, and their home was filled with the scent of dried herbs, the weight of polished stones used in meridian work, and the quiet conviction that nature, when understood and respected, holds profound restorative intelligence. From a young age, I absorbed an understanding of energy not as something mystical, but as life force – something to be observed, balanced, and tended through the natural world.

This upbringing gave me a lens through which I would later see the world: a reverence for natural healing, a trust in the body’s capacity to restore itself, and a deep curiosity about how the tools we surround ourselves with can either support or disrupt that balance.

The Moment of Convergence

My professional life took me into the world of fine jewelry design, where I learned to craft objects of enduring beauty. But I never stopped questioning. I noticed that across cultures and centuries, certain stones and symbols kept appearing in healing contexts. Ancient Chinese texts mapped jade and quartz to meridians and organs. Ayurvedic traditions used gemstones for chakra balancing. Medieval European healers prescribed specific stones for emotional ailments.

At the same time, I was reading voraciously in the fields of somatic psychology, neurobiology, and colour science. And I began to see something extraordinary: a convergence.

What my grandparents understood as grounding energy, modern trauma therapy recognizes as a ventral vagal response – the body’s pathway to safety and social engagement. What traditional systems described as rose quartz softening the heart, contemporary self-compassion research identifies as the physiological effect of gentle, warm-toned sensory cues. The cooling calm of amethyst in ancient pharmacopoeias mirrors the parasympathetic activation triggered by its deep violet wavelengths, as documented in colour psychology.

Science was not debunking tradition. It was translating it. The same truths about human well-being had been articulated in two distinct vocabularies, separated by centuries and continents, yet arriving at the same map of the body-mind connection.

This realization was the seed of Lunara: a brand built not on choosing between science and ancient wisdom, but on weaving them together into tools for modern living.

Lunara’s Foundation: Science Honours Tradition

Because I am a designer and a steward of this vision, not a clinician, I surrounded myself with a Clinical Advisory Board – licensed psychotherapists, a mindfulness teacher, and an art therapist. Their expertise ensures that every stone pairing, every ritual card, and every community offering is psychologically sound and trauma-informed. My family’s traditional knowledge provides the philosophical roots; our clinical board provides the evidence-based validation.

Together, we ask: how can a piece of jewelry support a morning grounding practice? How can a ring serve as a tactile reminder for self-compassion, grounded in the research of Dr. Kristin Neff? How can a citrine pendant, understood through both the traditional lens of creative life force and the modern lens of warm-colour psychology, gently shift our daily experience?

The answer is wearable, beautiful, and deeply intentional.

Why Natural, Untreated Stones?

From the perspective of my heritage and our clinical research, authenticity is non-negotiable. Genuine, untreated stones carry a sensory integrity – their cool weight, their minute imperfections, their geological memory – that synthetic or heavily treated materials lack. In embodied cognition, this sensory richness engages interoceptive pathways, grounding us in the present. In traditional healing, a stone unaltered by human intervention is believed to retain its full vital essence.

We source moonstone, rose quartz, amethyst, citrine, labradorite, and other semi-precious gems directly from ethical suppliers, in their most honest form. No dyes, no heat treatments that distort their nature. Set in recycled 14K and 18K gold, they become both an aesthetic choice and a healing choice.

Design as a Daily Ritual

My design philosophy is rooted in restorative minimalism. Every curve, every setting, every clasp is engineered for all-day wearability, because a tool only works if it stays with you. Hidden engravings – a single word like breathe, enough, or begin – offer private, tactile affirmations inspired by both narrative therapy and the ancient practice of wearing inscribed amulets.

The intention is to seamlessly blend into your day, so that putting on your Lunara piece becomes a quiet ritual – a signal to your nervous system that you are pausing, grounding, and returning to yourself.

Building Life Around the Convergence

Lunara is not merely a collection of jewelry. It is an invitation to build a life where the wisdom of our ancestors and the clarity of modern science walk hand in hand. Our community – the Lunara Circle – is a space for shared exploration. Through our journal, gatherings, and guided practices, members exchange how they integrate their pieces into real moments: the anxious morning, the challenging conversation, the quiet celebration.

I serve as the convener of this circle. My role is to hold space, to ask questions, to translate between the old and the new, and to remind us all that the path to well-being is one we can design together, with intention and beauty.

About Lunara

Where Clinical Insight Meets the Art of Adornment
Energy Stone Jewelry Informed by Science, Crafted with Intention

We are Lunara. We exist because healing deserves to be held – literally, in the palm of your hand, against the pulse of your wrist, close to your heart. Our jewelry is designed in collaboration with licensed psychotherapists and master goldsmiths, bridging evidence-based mind-body science with the ancient human instinct to find solace in the tangible.

The Science of Being Held: Why Objects Heal

As a clinical psychotherapist specializing in somatic therapy, I’ve spent years witnessing a quiet, recurring truth: when words are not enough, a physical anchor can guide us home to safety. I’ve sat with countless individuals in moments of dysregulation, offering not only my presence but a smooth, cool stone to hold. Almost invariably, their breathing slowed. Their gaze softened. Their bodies remembered calm.

This is not magic. This is neurobiology.

In his seminal work The Body Keeps the Score, Dr. Bessel van der Kolk illustrates how traumatic memory lives in the body, and how somatic tools can reawaken a felt sense of control. Peter Levine’s Waking the Tiger describes the “orienting response” – that innate, wordless pivot toward a tangible anchor when we feel adrift. And the growing field of embodied cognition, explored in works like The Embodied Mind, confirms what jewelers and healers have always intuited: what we touch, what we wear, and what we feel against our skin changes our inner state.

Lunara was founded to translate these clinical insights into objects of everyday grace. Our pieces are somatic anchors disguised as jewelry. A pendant to touch during anxious moments. A ring to turn when your mind spins. A bracelet that weights your wrist with a quiet reminder: you are here, you are safe.

The Colors of Calm: A Psychologist’s Palette

Why does a deep violet amethyst soothe, while a sunlit citrine gently energizes? This, too, lies in the architecture of our nervous system. Research in environmental psychology – from the restorative color theories in the Handbook of Color Psychology to the Kaplan’s attention restoration framework – demonstrates that certain hues lower physiological arousal, reduce mental fatigue, and invite emotional spaciousness.

When we select stones for Lunara pieces, we are guided not only by millennia of cross-cultural gemstone lore but also by these modern chroma-psychological principles:

Cool blues and violets (amethyst, labradorite, moonstone) signal the parasympathetic nervous system to rest, digest, and restore.

Warm pinks and soft greens (rose quartz, green aventurine) are associated with the ventral vagal state of social engagement and self-compassion.

Sun-drenched golds and oranges (citrine, carnelian) gently awaken alertness and creative optimism.

You are, quite literally, wearing a spectrally tuned environment against your skin – one calibrated to support the emotional state you wish to cultivate.

Ritual, Rewired: From Intention to Daily Practice

The academic study of ritual – beautifully articulated in Casper ter Kuile’s The Power of Ritual – reveals that secular, personalized rituals are cornerstones of modern well-being. They mark transitions, carve out meaning, and transform the ordinary into the sacred. And as Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Full Catastrophe Living teaches us, bringing mindful awareness to a single object can be a gateway to profound stress reduction.

Lunara transforms the act of putting on jewelry into a brief, daily ritual. When you clasp a necklace while silently setting an intention, when you touch a ring and repeat a phrase of self-kindness inspired by Dr. Kristin Neff’s self-compassion research, you are engaging in what clinicians call a conditioned regulatory practice. The jewelry becomes a cue, and the calm that follows becomes a learned response – accessible anytime, anywhere.

Design as a Therapeutic Tool

A healing object must be a pleasure to wear – ergonomically, aesthetically, emotionally. Our design team unites graduates from Europe’s leading jewelry academies with seasoned artisans. Their brief is exacting:

Embodied Ergonomics: Every curve is shaped for all-day comfort. A pendant bail that glides smoothly, a ring shank that never bites – because somatic ease is the foundation of emotional safety.

Restorative Minimalism: Our visual language draws on restorative environment principles: clean lines, soft organic silhouettes, uncluttered surfaces that offer visual rest to a fatigued mind.

Hidden Narrative: Inside select pieces, we engrave a single whispered word – breathe, enough, begin. This private detail serves as a tactile and visual mantra, deepening the personal ritual.

We craft exclusively in recycled 14K and 18K gold and recycled sterling silver. The materials that hold your healing should not harm the earth that sources them.

The Lunara Bespoke Journey: Your Intention, Crafted

True healing is never one-size-fits-all, and neither is our jewelry. Our bespoke process is an intimate collaboration that blends a therapeutic intake with artisanal creation:

Intention Session: We begin by listening. What are you navigating? Burnout, a life transition, a desire for deeper self-trust? Together, we articulate an intention – the emotional and psychological compass for your piece.

Stone & Design Curation: Drawing on both chroma-psychological principles and the world’s library of gemstone symbolism (meticulously documented by scholars like George Frederick Kunz), we recommend stones that align with your intention. You then co-design the piece with our jewelry artists, refining sketches and 3D renderings until every detail resonates.

Mindful Crafting & Ritual Card: Your talisman is handcrafted in a quiet, focused environment. It arrives with a guided ritual card, written by our clinical team, offering evidence-based suggestions – from grounding exercises to self-compassion practices – to help you integrate your new companion into daily life.

Our Integrity Framework

Lunara is held to the standards of clinical ethics and sustainable stewardship.

Clinical Advisory Board: Our protocols are reviewed by a board including psychotherapists, a mindfulness instructor, and an art therapist, ensuring our rituals are trauma-informed and psychologically sound.

Mental Health Giving: A fixed percentage of every sale funds accessible mental health care in underserved communities, because support should be available to all.

Planet-Conscious: Beyond recycled metals, our packaging is plastic-free, reusable, and delivered through carbon-neutral shipping.
